How "The Book Whisperer" has changed Daily 5 for me and a Word Work Journal FREEBIE for you!

I have been reading the raved about
The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller

It really is wonderful. I love to read and have always had my nose stuck in a book.
Since teaching, it is usually something I am reading to better myself as an educator rather than just for pleasure. I am excited that The Book Whisperer has reminded me just how much I love to read for fun. I usually read 3 or 4 books over holiday breaks and several more over the summer. This book was an amazing reminder of how important it is to allow our little readers to develop a natural love of literacy, something that they are not able to obtain through force. We need to give our kids time to fall into their books.

I love the Daily 5. I have used it every year since my student teaching. Every year I change the overall structure of my time, though. I often feel like the little 15 minute chunks are not enough for my readers to settle into and get lost in their books. By adding work on writing, word work, listen, buddy and read to self my kids really aren't getting the time they desperately need with self selected texts.

As I return to work on Monday I plan to make some changes this year, as well.

ONE:
Listen to Reading for "dormant" readers every day!
I know the students who are "dormant" readers. Reading is challenging and they dread it in every way.
These are the readers who need to be allowed to listen to reading more frequently than those who are active readers. All readers light up at listening to a read aloud.
They are involved and engaged. They are visualizing, predicting, and hungry for more. I am going to utilize technology for students who need to be inspired by read alouds most and these are the "dormant" readers. This allows students who are "active" readers more of the time they need with independent reading.

TWO:
I will not use worksheets and multiple choice tests to confirm that my students have read and understand a text.
This takes away from the joy of reading. Miller commented that if adults had to take a multiple choice test on every television show they watched we would watch a lot less t.v. This is true of books too.

THREE:
No more work on writing.
We have a huge writing block. I will not have a work on writing session like I have in the past. The time we have in class to read is so important. There is less and less time to read at home. We live in an era where both parents are usually working. Parents are exhausted after a long day at work and the kids are just as tired. I can't blame them. It takes everything for me to read to Conner before bed each night.  Our eyelids are heavy and we want nothing more to snuggle together and fall asleep. This means the time we have in class for reading must be used for that and that alone. I am not using our writing time to read to why should we use our reading time to write. My kids are reading under tables as I am teaching. They can't wait to get back to their books, so why not give them the time to do so rather than filling that time up with grammar worksheets and other writing assignments.

FOUR:
Eliminating the reading log.
I have not made the final decision yet, but I am thinking very seriously about eliminating reading logs. Miller discusses this in her book, too. Reading logs are supposed to tell us that kids are reading at home. Guess what, they don't tell us squat! I remember having my mom sign my reading logs at the last possible second each week. She knew I had read but she didn't time me. She didn't force me to read. We read together and I read alone. At no point when we were reading did I stop to say "oh, let me get my reading log so you can sign it." It takes away from the joy of reading. Those students who aren't reading at home aren't going to do so just because of a reading log either.

Reading logs are part of the culture of our school, though. I have a weekly behavior sheet in my students take home folders. I am thinking that somewhere on this form I will put a place for parents to add a single signature for the reading they are doing at home. This is something that will serve as a reminder to them that this is still a requirement. I will let you know more about how this goes.

Daily 5 is wonderful. The point of it is to engage the students in meaningful work so that the teacher may teach reading lessons that meet the needs of individuals and small groups of students. It is not a program and it does not work the same for everyone. I have not yet had a group of kids where I didn't need to make changes in my Daily 5 system to meet the new needs a new class presented.

Don't be afraid to play with Daily 5 and do what works best for you!

Onto your Freebie:

Last year our classes were so high {38} and this year they were projected to be just as high.
Thank goodness were only at the low number of  30 this year.
Last year I had so many options available for word work:
Stamp letters, play do words, painting words on chalkboard with water, scrabble words, dotty (bingo) words, magnetic letters, play-do stampers, lego letters, cube letters

I have always heard, read and felt like students are more likely to remain on task and be engaged if they are allowed choice. It's not that I don't believe this, but I don't think it is always true. Kids last year we constantly off task when it came to work work. I didn't feel like it was effective at the third grade level either. I wanted something that required them to think more and that I could hold them accountable to.

For this, I have created the weekly word work journal.
Each student has a book with word work for the whole year. Each week they complete all parts.
On Friday if they completed the weekly word work they get to choose free choice word work with the choices above. Simple as that!

Bully FREE begins with ME

October is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Month! This week among our Halloween activities we also decorated our bullying t-shirts. We will wear these shirts once a week for the rest of the year. The kids brought in their own white t-shirts and I provided the permanent markers and fabric paint. I will definitely take a picture on Monday when out shirts have dried and we are able to try them on. They are pretty darn cute!!

In other news here is the Inferring Video my sweet darling made! I attached a copy of the song if you would like to use it. We are working on Synthesizing this next week. Who knows, another video could be in our near future!

Spicing up Inferring..... Freebies exclusively for my followers!

I just love my job...
I love it so so so much! Goodness me what a difference I am feeling over the last few weeks. I just love when all of the routines set in.  I mean I have such a wonderful group of kids. They are so smart and always excited to learn. It is not fun to teach when the kids aren't into it. My kids though, they love to sing, dance, and are always up for a challenging activity! Now that I have bragged my butt off about em' I must show you what we have been up to this week!!!

Inferring hmmmm... inferring... well it means to draw a conclusion. Huh?

You know, like to read between the lines. What lines?

Like looking deeper at what the author isn't exactly saying (crickets).

Why is inferring so easy but so hard to teach!!??? Most kids do it without even knowing they are. I just find it crazy hard to put into words. So... this week we inferred like nobody's biz.

After reading and inferring, modeling and introducing it to my kids I introduced them to Iggy the Inferring Iguana. They know Iggy, they understand that he reminds them to infer but they needed more practice. Thanks Iggy....

(If you don't do Beanie Baby reading and writing strategies look into it. My kids love them and are always so excited when they see a new one on my desk.)

Later we got to the juicy stuff. After we were introduced to infer we embarked on a little scavenger hunt. I hid pieces of a paper skeleton ($1 at none other than the dollar tree) all around the school.
As a class we read the clues, inferred where the piece might be and set off to find it.
This really clicked with my kids!

The clue about the principals office was my fave. They assumed the front door (even though it says not the front). Then one of my little smarties said and I quote "Look deeper though! It says..."
YES YES YES!!!

Here is a copy exclusive to my followers. Just click the picture below!
Hand in the office!

Inferring away!

Modeling the leg bone!

Aha!!!
There it is!

So today I gave my students another opportunity to practice their inferencing skills first thing. The night before I taped a smartie to the bottom of each of their chairs. You can use anything an eraser, a sweet note, it doesn't matter. After morning work I handed them each a clue to read. I instructed them to read it, infer what it is saying, but wait to begin looking. After they had time to process and infer we discussed the details and "dug deeper". They concluded that it was under their chair (after a few kids looked under their table and in their book bag, but hey). Then I let them all look at the same time. Of course they found it and inferring is all of a sudden fun and exciting.

And here is your exclusive copy of the clue!

Finally my favorite part!!!! I wrote a song what what... while getting ready for work this morning it just came to me. My kids came up with the cutest hand motions. We practiced today and they are going to practice tonight. Tomorrow I will have a music video for you, but here are the lyrics. It goes to the tune of Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girl (random, I know but I was looking up inference videos on Youtube and the song was on one of the videos. I though um strange but it's catchy so I decided it was perfect for rewriting the lyrics.

Look back tomorrow for our exclusive music video!!
Happy inferring friends!

Ready... Set... Teach

Even though I have been preparing for the last 5+ weeks I can't help but have this feeling that there is more to do. I dunno what it is people- but I REALLY need to learn to let go! (So hard though!!).

Tonight I am printing a few more name stickers to add to things in the morning because our class lists changed over the weekend... goodness me.

Tomorrow I will be teaching about choosing Good Fit books and I came across this sweet little video that I thought was perfect and allows the kids to not listen to me for 5 min. That 5 min. can be hard to come across the first day!!! They gotta take what they can get, right?

I hope you can use this too!

I also spent the evening getting my clothes ready for the week. Whew... had a lot of laundry to put away and sort through but don't you worry I made it out alive... so here are the fits for the week!! (I think this would make a lovely little Sunday link party and would save us time throughout the rest of the week... agree??)

TUESDAY
Black slacks, Blue button up, Gray heels

Wednesday
Black pencil skirt, Brown and black striped top and black peep toe heels (Nine West, comfiest ever!!)

THURSDAY
Khakis, Coral Lace shirt paired with black tank under, black flats

Happy First Day to those of you who go back tomorrow and for those of you who already started happy 4 day week... WOOP WOOP!!!

BOGGLE Board dilemma---solved!

5 days left of summer until I am officially back at school. I cannot believe it! I have to say however, that I am quite excited for fall. I just love wearing boots, cardigans and scarves. Just this morning when I went to take the recycling out I could smell fall in the air, like that crisp dewy smell in the air and it was just a tad bit cold. I am sure I will miss summer once it is gone but it is nice to look forward to fall!

Today, I went to the Ruth Culham writing conference. If you don't know, Ruth is the author of all of the 6 traits books. She had a lot of good information to share and my team and I are so excited to get writing going for this year. I think that most valuable piece I took away was the breakdown of the different traits. Ideas, Conventions, Sentence Fluency; it can all be so broad. It's important to break those down into separate pieces and I think this will help me keep my mini lessons more focused.

Ruth talked about teaching each trait for a week and then moving onto the next trait. The key is teaching a component of the trait. Now the question is which component to teach. Her website is full of resources and printables. I will give you some more details when we start planning more of the nitty gritty!

My classroom is down to the final details and I hope to post my big reveal tomorrow! CanNOT wait to meet my little darlings!!!

I put up my boggle board last week and struggled with how to easily change out the letters. As my classroom projects are drawing to an end I am losing steam and don't want to velcro or glue anything that I don't have to. If you are having the same dilemma check out my little video to find out what I did!

And... As I am updating some of my word work I have a couple of FREEBIES for ya! Just click the pictures to get yours!

Newbie up in here! Linky Party and a FREEBIE

Thank you,

For throwing the Newbie Bloggers Blog Hop! I am excited to share about myself, but it has also been so much fun reading about everyone else and being introduced this this all.

I live in the absolutely beautiful state of Oregon! I always think I might want to live somewhere more sunny like California or Arizona but truly, we have it all here.
Teaching has been absolutely insane for me. I will be teaching 3rd Grade this year but, I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 1st and now I am happy to be back to 3rd. Mmmm hmmm can you say roller coaster ride? Every year is a great one and I certainly feel blessed!

I have worked with the same district for 6 years. I started as an assistant in a special education classroom (best experience). Then I was a "skills trainer" helping students with special needs be successful in a general education classroom. After that I did my student teaching (prego as ever, I might add). This was when all of the first round of BIG cuts happened. There was no position for me upon finishing but I applied everywhere. At the very end of the summer a 1/2 time 5th grade position opened up! I got the job and it was perfect. The following spring I interviewed for a full time 3rd grade position and the rest is history!

Well, when did I start blogging or when did I start stocking all of your blogs? Just kidding but really I started blogging in July of 2012, officially.

Well it might sound like a ridiculously silly tip but it was something that I had to learn. Create your blogs with the "compose" tab, instead of the "Edit HTML" tab. It is much easier ;)

And now... drumroll please... onto the freebie. Well this was A LOT, and I mean A LOT of work. We use Rigby's Literacy by Design in our district. It is a perfect fit to Daily 5 and integrated well with Social Studies and Science. There is a huge vocabulary piece to it but there are no pictures for the kids to make connections to the real world. This FREEBIE is gigantic. There are 160 vocabulary cards with word, definition, and picture. I use the cards to introduce new vocabulary words and to play review games. For example, you could pass out the cards you are working on and have students find their matches. The word will have to find the definition and they will have to find the person with their matching picture. You could also use these as a center game. Hmmm, maybe I will have to create a little recording sheet soon. Anywho magoos I hope you all enjoy these!! Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions. Click each picture for each file. Remember I said they are big so there are 3 different sets.
